CHERI BUSTOS WINS 17th DISTRICT PRIMARY
Bustos Thanks Grassroots Supporters and draws contrast with Opponent's Misguided Priorities
Joined by supporters, friends and family, Cheri Bustos credited the tremendous grassroots strength of her campaign for tonight’s decisive victory. Bustos, the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 17th District, triumphed with a 58% percent margin over her nearest competitor in Tuesday’s primary election.
Thanking her supporters, Bustos made clear the choice voters have in November comes down to priorities, and the incumbent Congressman’s misguided priorities are not on the side of the middle class.
“We need to get Washington's debt under control, but we need to do it the right way -- cut waste and end tax breaks for millionaires, but protect Social Security and Medicare and programs that help businesses create jobs. Voters have a choice between the misguided priorities of the incumbent Congressman and the priorities I have heard as I crisscrossed the district. He’s fighting for millionaires—I’m fighting for the middle class. He votes to protect tax breaks for billionaires and big oil companies while attempting to end Medicare as we know it. Illinois families deserve to have their voices heard and the right priorities defended in Washington.”
Bustos congratulated her Democratic opponents on a hard-fought but civil primary campaign. “It’s now time to come together as Democrats to take back the 17th District for the middle class and hard working men and women in Illinois,” she said.
Cheri Bustos is a working mother with three grown sons and is married to a captain with the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department.
Cheri Bustos will be available for media interviews all day Wednesday and Thursday. Please contact Matt Larson at (815) 200-8822 for availability.
